It is my aim to post here regular information about photographs or photographers that:
  • For some reason I like
  • Are almost absolutely unknown
A couple of days ago, among the large number of users of photo.net, I found Anupam Basu. I liked his chemical BW photos because of his technical skill, his sensitivity and his intelligent use of this classic media. I have to say that every day I appreciate more chemical BW photography.

I have nothing against the well known users of photo.net, you can see amazing images in the first pages of the ranking.. but I like to find people doing an original and silent job.

La libélula negra

A mi me parece que la libélula negra es la más elegante de todas. Pero es extremadamente reservada, raras veces tolera la presencia humana a menos de cinco metros. Si os acercais más, se alejará tranquilamente dando aletazos grandes y perezosos, como si tuviera las alas de terciopelo. Yo pensaba que no podía volar con más energía hasta que vi a dos machos peleando y persiguiéndose a toda velocidad. Lo que debe ocurrir es que no nos considera una amenaza especialmente grave y se marcha, pero con desgana. De todos modos, para poder fotografiarla hay que tener la paciencia de los grandes santos, incluyendo a Job (que al ser del Antiguo Testamento yo creo que propiamente no es un santo). Se llama calopteryx haemorrhoidalis . ¿Por qué el nombre de este animal tan bonito tiene que ser nada menos que haemorrhoidalis ? (en efecto, de hemorroides). Es que si os fijais, en la parte posterior del abdomen, por debajo, los últimos segmentos son rojos, como si padeciera de la triste dolencia anal

La salvación de las libélulas caídas

De forma inesperada, la libélula caída logró salvarse por sus propios medios. Aleteando torpemente dentro del agua llegó hasta una ramita y trepó. Una vez allí secó sus alas mojadas con un movimiento de torsión (si pincháis aquí podréis ver una modesta animación, es algo rapidísimo que necesitaría de una cámara de alta velocidad). Aleteando hubiera generado sustentación, pero disponen de gran variedad de movimientos en las alas. Creo que hacen esto cuando quieren calentarse sin salir volando, como el Bombylius del otro día . Los insectos son siempre mucho más sofisticados de lo que uno piensa. Pero otras libélulas llegan al agua demasiado cansadas y no pueden hacer un esfuerzo tan grande. Es entonces cuando el fotógrafo decide intervenir en la escena y rescatar a la libélula, sabiendo que este es un gesto completamente inútil que en realidad hace para sentirse feliz. Ciconia nigra - for all my friends

It seems there are only 6000-7000 couples in the world and this afternoon I was soo lucky I could see this young individual !! Thanks to Pedro Bescós who told me that it had just arrived, who knows from where. But it was too far, even for Pedro's telescope. Then, a type of falcon (Circus aeruginosus) approached to the Ciconia and it started flying. It surrounded the lake, even flew over the observatory and then came back to its original position.. too far again. All that happened in less than one minute, I'm sorry I was too inexpert and nervous so I could not get a better photo. A camera faster than D70s (3fps) and a lens lighter than Bigma 50-500, and with VR, would have helped too :) To be on the safe side, I increased sensitivity to ISO640. The camera was adjusted to underexpose -1. But this was probably a good idea to don't overexpose the white areas. However, the matrix meter here was right and the photo IS one point underexposed. So the image was noisy and I used neat
